Privacy
The short version: we hold your address so we can tell you when we reach you, and what you tell the app about your reading so it has something to go on. You can ask for all of it, and you can have all of it deleted, from inside the app.
Who is responsible
The trader behind Time to Read is It’s Time To Read, a Dutch sole trader (eenmanszaak), KvK 94739374, establishment number 000060191473, Casembrootstraat 60 RD, 1972 CC IJmuiden, the Netherlands. What this page covers
This website and the Time to Read app: the beta list, the referral programme, the pages you are reading, and everything the app holds about your reading.
Until 26 August 2026 this section said the app was not out yet, and promised the policy would not quietly start applying to it. It has not been stretched in silence: the app began holding data, so the policy was rewritten and the date at the top changed, which is what that promise was for. One page covers both, because a second page somewhere else is a page nobody finds.
What we store, and why
| What | Why | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Email address | To write to you when the beta opens where you live, and about the friends who use your invite link | Your consent |
| First name | It is what the friends you invite see on the invite page | Your consent |
| Town or city, country | We open one place at a time, so this is how we know when your turn comes round | Your consent |
| Reading languages | So the first thing we send you is in a language you read | Your consent |
| The sentence you agreed to, and when | Consent has to be provable, and "they ticked a box" is not a record of what they ticked | Legal obligation |
| Your invite code, and how often it was opened | To run the referral programme and to see whether a shared link is doing anything | Performance of the agreement |
| Who invited you, if anyone | It is the whole referral programme: without it nobody earns anything | Performance of the agreement |
| Page views, only if you say yes to cookies | To see which places to open next | Your consent |
| The campaign tags on the link you arrived by (utm_*), the site that sent you, and the page you landed on | To see which campaigns bring readers. Kept for the length of your visit, stored once with a signup or an app-store landing, never with an IP address | Legitimate interest |
That is the whole website list. There is no advertising identifier, no profile built from your browsing, and no data bought from anybody. That last sentence holds for the app too.
And in the app
The app is a different question from the website, so it gets its own list. Almost all of it is here because you typed it or tapped it, and the reason is next to it.
| What | Why | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Your email address, from the Apple, Google or emailed-link sign-in you used | It is the account: how you sign in on a second phone, and how we reach you about your subscription. Sign in with Apple with Hide My Email turned on gives us a forwarding address instead, and that is what we store | Performance of the agreement |
| Your name, and the handle we make from it | Your name is what another reader sees beside a recommendation you wrote. The handle is the address of your profile page | Performance of the agreement |
| Your country, the language the app is in, and your phone's timezone | We open one country at a time, we write to you in a language you read, and the monthly pick has to land on your morning rather than somebody else's | Performance of the agreement |
| Anything you put on your profile, and where you got to in the onboarding | So a reader who reinstalls carries on where they stopped instead of starting again | Performance of the agreement |
| What you tell us about your reading: the genres you chose, the ones you asked us to keep away, your dealbreakers, your goals, the languages you read in, and the two lines you write in your own words | It is the whole question. A book chosen without knowing what you finish, and what you will not touch, is a guess | Performance of the agreement |
| What a model read out of those two lines | So your own words change what you are shown instead of sitting in a box nobody reads. Every genre it derives is shown back to you with a remove beside it | Performance of the agreement |
| Your shelves: which shelf a book is on, your rating, how far through you are, the dates, and whether you marked it one to keep to yourself | It is your library, and it is the strongest signal we have about what to send you next | Performance of the agreement |
| Every deck decision: shelved, passed, or already read | A pass is the cleanest thing you will ever tell us. It is why the deck stops showing you what you do not want | Performance of the agreement |
| Your reading sessions and the totals built from them: minutes, pages, streak, level | It is how the streak and the pace are counted, and a streak that resets because you crossed a timezone is not a streak | Performance of the agreement |
| The questions you ask, the answers you give, the reviews you publish, and the clubs, messages and comments you take part in | It is the product. None of it works without a record of it, and the accepted answer is what gives the reader who wrote it their read rate | Performance of the agreement |
| Whether your reading appears in your friends' feed | Reading is not ordinary data. Nothing of yours goes into anybody's feed until you have answered this, and you can change the answer | Your consent |
| Readers you block or mute, and anything you report, including the note you write | A block has to survive the other person deleting what they wrote, or there is nothing left to act on | Legal obligation |
| Your App Shield settings: whether it is on, and for how long | So the setting is still there on your next phone. Which apps you shield is not in that list. That never leaves your phone, because iOS does not let us see it and we would not want to | Performance of the agreement |
| Your town or city, by name | To show you readers and clubs where you live, and because we open one place at a time. You can skip the step and nothing is stored | Your consent |
| If you tap "Use my city": one coarse position, rounded on your phone to about a kilometre before it is sent, turned into a city name and then thrown away | So you do not have to type your city. The coordinates never reach our database: the rounding happens on your phone, the lookup happens on our server so the company doing it never sees your address, and what survives the exchange is the name of a town | Your consent |
| The country your connection appears to be in, read from the request and never stored | So the country question opens on the right answer instead of on nothing. It is a header our own server reads; nothing is fetched and no address is written down | Legitimate interest |
| If you paste a Goodreads link: the public profile it points at, and every book on those shelves with its rating, dates and review | It is the fastest honest way to know what you already read, and it is what makes the first recommendation good rather than generic | Your consent |
| If you join a waiting list for a country we have not opened: your email address, that country, the language the app was in, and a phone number if you type one | So we can write to you once, the day that country opens, in the language you were reading. Leave the number blank and there is no number | Your consent |
| The exact sentence you agreed to, in the language it was on screen in, and when | Consent has to be provable, and "they ticked a box" is not a record of what they ticked | Legal obligation |
| Your subscription: trial or paid, which plan, when the period ends, and the record that we warned you before the trial converts | It decides whether the app opens, and telling you before we charge you is required. It comes from Apple through RevenueCat and never from a card number, which we never see | Performance of the agreement |
| When you tap a buy button: which book, which shop, and which screen you tapped it from | Affiliate commission is a real line in what pays for this, and it cannot be counted without recording the tap | Legitimate interest |
| Your phone's push token | It is the address a notification is delivered to. Say no and there is no token | Your consent |
| One event when a screen opens, and the message if the app crashes | It is how we find the step where people give up, which is the only way an onboarding ever gets shorter, and how a crash on a train still reaches us when the train arrives | Legitimate interest |
| If you photograph a shelf or a cover: the picture, read on your phone | The scanner reads spines and barcodes on the phone itself, so the photo normally never leaves it. One case is different: when the barcode and your phone's own reader have both failed, and only if you tap the button that says so, the picture goes to Google to be read. What comes back is a title and an author, and the picture is not kept | Your consent |
| What you type into the book search | To find the book. If we do not hold it, the words you typed go to Open Library through our server so we can add it, which is how the catalogue grows | Performance of the agreement |
No advertising identifier, no location beyond the city you confirm, and nothing sold to anybody.
Cookies
The site sets no cookies of its own. Your language choice and your answer to the cookie question are kept in your browser's local storage, which never leaves your device and which clearing your browser data removes.
If you say yes to the banner, Google Analytics is loaded and sets its own cookies to count page views. If you say no, or if you never answer, nothing from Google is requested at all. Advertising features and personalisation are switched off permanently, not just until you object.
Who else sees it
- Contabo, Germany. The server this site and its database run on.
- Cloudflare. Sits in front of the site, terminates the encryption and blocks attacks. Sees the requests, not the contents of the database.
- Hostnet and Brevo. Our email. They handle the mail we send you.
- Google Analytics, and only if you said yes. Data may be processed in the United States under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework.
- Internet Archive, who run Open Library. The app fetches book covers straight from them and then keeps them on your phone, so they see your IP address and which covers it asked for, which is to say which books. Not your account, not your name, not your shelf. Every cover is asked for once and never again.
- Google, through the Gemini API. Reads your genre choices, your dislikes, the two lines you write in your own words and the questions you ask, to score books for you, to choose the Reading Desk's shelf under a question and to write the sentence explaining why a book was chosen. It gets what you told us about your reading. It does not get your name, your address or your account.
- Google again, and only if you ask. The last rung of the book scanner sends the photo you took, once you tap the button that says so, when the barcode and your phone's own reader have both failed. What survives is a title and an author.
- BigDataCloud, but only if you tap "Use my city", and only ever a pair of coordinates already rounded to about a kilometre. It goes through our server rather than from your phone, so they see us and never your address.
- RevenueCat, and through them Apple. They turn a purchase on your phone into an entitlement on your account. They get an account id and what you bought, never a card number, because we never see one either.
- Apple, who deliver your notifications, and whose on-device dictation writes the two lines if you speak them rather than type them.
- bol.com and Amazon, if you tap through to buy a book. They see what any visitor arriving from any link sees: your IP address and which book you came for.
Nobody else. We do not sell your data to anybody, and we never will: the subscription is the business model, which is exactly why there is nothing to sell. We do earn a commission when you buy a book through a link in the app, and the book page says so where the link is.
How long
Your beta-list entry stays until the beta ends or until you ask us to remove it, whichever comes first. Ask, and it goes the same day, along with your invite code. Where a referral has already earned somebody months, we keep the fact that it happened without keeping your address, because the other person's account depends on it.
In the app, everything above lasts as long as your account and goes when you delete it, with four deliberate exceptions. A review or a question you published stays on the book page with your name taken off it, because other readers are still reading it and the answers hanging off it belong to the people who wrote them. A report stays, without your name, because a report you made about somebody else is not yours to withdraw. Payment and refund records stay, without your name, because we are required to keep them. And a waiting-list place goes with the account: asking to be forgotten withdraws the consent it stood on, so we delete the row rather than keep an address nobody owns.
A Goodreads import is tidied sooner: rows that matched a book we already hold are deleted 90 days after the import finishes. Rows we could not match are kept, without your name attached to them, because they are what tells us which book to add to the catalogue next.
What you can ask for
- A copy of everything we hold about you. In the app it is Settings, Your data, "Send me everything you hold", and it arrives by email. By email to us for anything on the website.
- A correction, if something is wrong.
- Deletion. In the app it is Settings, Your data, "Delete my account". It waits thirty days before anything is erased, so a tap you did not mean is not the end of it, and you can call it off from the same screen for the whole of that time. By email for the beta list, same day, no reasons required.
- Withdrawal of consent, at any time, without it affecting anything that already happened.
- Every mail we send has an unsubscribe link, and it works.
Children
Neither the beta list nor the app is for under-16s. We do not knowingly hold their details, and if we learn we have, we delete them.
Changes
If this page changes in a way that matters, the date at the top changes and we write to everybody on the list. We will not quietly widen what we do with something you already gave us.

Privacy
Wie verantwoordelijk is
De onderneming achter Time to Read is It’s Time To Read, eenmanszaak, KvK 94739374, vestigingsnummer 000060191473, Casembrootstraat 60 RD, 1972 CC IJmuiden.
